During the inaugural speech, Honorable Minister mentioned that change in the structure of the soil had affected not only agriculture but the entire ecosystem. The heavy erosion of  soil had created conditions that could have impact on the economy of the state as well. More than 1000 landslips had occurred in 260 locations out of which 100 are of major magnitude. While the national average of soil erosion is 16 tons per hectare, it is 30 to 50 tons per hectare in Kerala, and it is essential to work for reducing the impact of the same. Unscientific land utilization and the application of fertilizers have to be brought down. This can be better achieved by proper coordination between the Agriculture department and the research institutions.

There were two technical sessions.

Forenoon session was chaired by Dr.Subramonia Iyer, Former Prof., Kerala Agricultural University. Three papers were presented. They were ‘Post flood Scenario of Kerala in Agricultural Sector’ by  Sri.J.Justin Mohan, Director, SS&SC Dept., ‘Post Flood rehabilitation of Soil based ecosystem’ by  Dr.Byju.G., Principal Scientist, CTCRI and ‘Landslides in Kerala – case studies’ by Dr John Mathai., Sr.Scientist  (Retd), NCESS.
